Seven grant agreements funding Automated Road Transport projects

According to the news published on the European Commission’s website (https://ec.europa.eu/inea/en/news-events/newsroom/eu-reinforces-commitment-field-automated-road-transport) on June 20, seven grant agreements with projects in the domain of Automated Road Transport were recently signed. The projects will be operated under Horizon 2020, the biggest EU framework programme for research and innovation, which aims to provide funding for a resource efficient transport that respects the environment.
The article also reports that the Innovation and Networks Executive Agency (INEA), which is a part of the Horizon 2020 Smart, Green and Integrated Transport Societal Challenge, celebrates the signature on the occasion of the ITS European Congress in Strasbourg. On the one hand, the signature is of great importance because this is the first time that INEA funds such a major Innovation Action in Automated Road Transport grouping all key European car manufacturers.
On the other hand, with a total funding of close to €62 million, these projects will test and study the viability of automated driving as a safe and efficient means of transportation. The projects also offer a great opportunity to explore and promote new service concepts to provide inclusive mobility.
Among these, one of the most important is the L3Pilot project. This is a large-scale pilot involving cross-border tests in nine countries by 13 Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) with over 1 000 drivers and around 100 cars, managed in fleets for duration of one and a half years and demonstrated in four showcases for a total EU contribution of more than €36 million.
According to the expectations, these envisaged seven projects will improve safety and market adoption of automated vehicles, by considering the needs and requirements of all users and relevant stakeholders (i.e. policy makers, standardisation bodies, certifiers, insurance companies, driving schools, etc.). Therefore, the main aim of the European Union through these projects is to reinforce commitment and promote initiatives in the field Automated Road Transport.
